Freeman J. Fithian.
The death of Judge Freeman J. Fithian of New York City, announced in our telegraphic columns, will be read with sincere sorrow by many friends in Lockport and Niagara county. We are without particulars of his death other than those furnished in the dispatch elsewhere.
Judge Fithian was born, we believe, in Schoharie county, in this state. He was 67 years of age at the time of his taking away. He came to Lockport at an early age and was brought up in the family of his uncle, Alfred Judd, a former well-known groceryman here. He studied law with the late Judge Gardner. He was at one time District Attorney of Niagara county. He subsequently went to Buffalo and was also District Attorney of Erie county. Later in life he went to New York to reside, where he was made a local Judge and where as everywhere else he was held in high esteem, not only by the legal profession bu t all others of his acquaintance. Judge Fithian was brother of Mrs. R. M. Skeels formerly of this city. He also leaves a brother, Isaac Fithian of Buffalo. He married Miss Harriet Benedict, daughter of an old resident of Lockport, who survives him. The deceased was a man of ability and character and greatly respected in the various walks of life. His death will be a shock to our community. We have not learned the time or place of the funeral.
