There are two "Onie Combs" in this family.

The Onie Combs who is memorialized here was born 31 years after the earlier Onie, and although both were part of this tangled Freeman/Combs family, this Onie was born neither Combs nor Freeman. This "Onie" was born Ona Elizabeth Bennett, who married one of the Combs siblings: John Monroe Combs March 5, 1914 in Quitman, Wood Co TX.

In addition to the above, three of the Freeman siblings married three Combs siblings: James William Freeman m. Mary Combs; Lurana Leona (Onie) Freeman m. James Erwin Combs; and Ina Elizabeth Freeman m. Samuel Combs.

The web of this family is further entangled because this Onie's half-sister Melzie Orlds married David "Henry" Freeman, brother of the three Freeman siblings who married Combs siblings. Henry & Melzie Freeman, as well as John & Onie (Bennett) Combs, stayed in Amarillo when most of the rest of the family moved to California, and these families are nearly all buried in Llano Cemetery. Whereas the earlier Onie Combs lived from 1864-1951, died at age 87, buried in Merced CA, this Onie lived from 1895-1937, died at age 41, and is buried in Llano, Amarillo TX.

Onie and John M. Combs had three daughters and a son:
Gertrude, Ruby, John M. Jr., and Essa.

Her obituary lists two sisters living in Amarillo at the time of her death: Altie Burrelson and Melzie Freeman.

The earlier ("the other") Onie was Lurana Leona Freeman who married James Ervin/Erwin/Irwin Combs. Like nearly every member in this extended family, she went by her middle name, Leona, but nearly everyone called her "Onie" and she was known to all of us who have heard the family stories as "Aunt Onie". Our "Aunt Onie" and "Uncle Erwin" had no children, and Onie was widowed while they were living in the Amarillo, Texas, area where Erwin was buried - first in a pauper's grave, then his remains were moved to Llano Cemetery, where he has no stone. Three Freeman siblings married three Combs siblings: James William Freeman m. Mary Combs; Lurana Leona (Onie) Freeman m. James Erwin Combs; and Ina Elizabeth Freeman m. Samuel Combs. After James Erwin's death, his widow Onie moved to Merced to live with her twice-widowed brother "Willie" – James William Freeman; Willie and Onie lived together in a small house outside of town until Onie died in 1951, with Willie dying only two years later; they are buried side-by-side in Evergreen Memorial Park in Merced. She was 87 years old.
