Obituary from the Oct 19 1906 Waterloo Courier
J. SHAFFER DIES TODAY
Jacob Shaffer, a well known resident of Eagle township is dead, having passed away this morning. He was a pioneer settler of that township, having come there in the sixties. For some time he has been suffering with consumption, and spent last winter in Florida, where he seemed to get relief.
He was born in Germany and was married in St. Mary's church in this city in 1872.
Mr. Shaffer was a very intelligent man, well informed on all topics of the times. He was a correspondent for many of the newspapers, and was a good writer. He was a reader of the leading periodicals and in this way was unusually well informed. He was a democrat and took an active part in the counsels of his party.
He was 47 years of age. The funeral will be held from the Eagle Center Catholic church at 10 o'clock next Monday.
He is survived by his wife and nine children, two of his children being dead. The children are Mrs. Angie E. Lilleg, Carl P., Will J., Charles Jacob, John D., Edward Fritz, Susie Gertrude, Bertie William and P. J. Shaffer. The three oldest are married and all live in that community.
Mr. Shaffer was an ideal citizen beloved by his family and respected by all of his aquaintances.
