An unknown number of midshipmen were on a landing craft-style of ship at what was then part of a large training area used by the Navy for a training center. This center was used by ALL U.S. forces that would later invade enemy positions around the world during World War II. A prime example of this were the troops who did extensive training here were the very ones who stormed the beaches of Normandy on June 6, 1944. Other invasions happened after that and more were planned all over the world. To the public, sailing by on ships that cruised up & down the Chesapeake Bay, as they passed by the desolate Coast Guard lighthouse at Cove Point in Calvert County, they saw little hint as to what occurred there. The beach seemed isolated and remote. Few would guess that a whole lot of advanced military training was ever done here and all along the bayside beaches to the south. This area would come to be known as 'the cradle of invasion' because of the nearby U.S. Naval Amphibious Training Base (NATB) on the Dowell peninsula just north of Solomons Island, Md. Today, most of this base is gone, having faded off into history. The Calvert Marine Museum though at Solomons has complete documentation on the history of this base. At the south end of the former base is a monument called 'On Watch' which commemorates the 1,000s of people who passed through this base during WW II.

Along the portion of the Chesapeake Bay near Cove Point, Md. for decades the only structure around for many miles was the lighthouse there operated and staffed by the U.S. Coast Guard. This is what it looked like in 1928 (their file photo). Today, it is owned by the Calvert Marine Museum which also maintains a complete exhibit on 'the cradle of invasion' of which this area was a part. Just to the south the U.S. Navy operated a training school for amphibious landings and much of the training during WW II was conducted here in relative secrecy. Which may explain why the news article said she died on the base but in reality she died close to this lighthouse which is well north of the base.
