Darryl “Blue” Wayne Burns, 72, of Old River Winfree, Texas, passed away on Friday, December 29, 2017 in Kingwood, Texas. He was born on May 1, 1945 in Houston, Texas to Jimmie D. and Jessie Albertine Smith Burns.
Blue ran the roads of his country community by foot, horseback, tractor, and trucks from a young boy to a man. As a boy, Sunday school was a must; but getting a mischievous young man there is a different story. With a self-made sling shot in his pocket, young Blue would get his meal for the day or possibly just get himself in trouble. Blue rode horses all his life, breaking them, roping cattle on them, hunting with them, or just riding them until he was ready to trade or sell for something new that caught his eye. Riding horses became such an avid part of his life, Blue started racing horses as a jockey for years; winning on the track and in his heart. Working with tractors and heavy equipment was also a love and talent he had. If Blue wasn’t working on the pipeline running heavy equipment, he was working on a driveway, ditch, or whatever somebody needed fixed. If you got held up on the FM roads behind an old tractor driven by Blue headed to help someone that was not an odd thing to see. Blue helped run “The Pond” lodge on Trinity Bay for 20+ years. Deer camps, deer hunting, and the buddies that gathered at night around the campfire was close to his heart. Drinks with Blue in his “barn” accompanied by many friends was a site to see. The jokes and constant wit that Blue had was nothing more than entertainment. To be around Blue was to be laughing. And behind that funny, tough exterior, Blue was a sensitive man with a helpful, giving heart.
Blue was affectionately known as Biddy by his loving mother. As busy as Blue was in his daily life, he was still a devoted husband, dad, pawpaw, son, brother, and friend. Blue visited friends and family daily. His uplifting presence will truly be missed.
Blue was preceded in death by his father; his sister Linda Burns; his stepfather PawPaw Rhodes; and his niece Alison Rhodes. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 6pm until 8pm on Tuesday, January 2, 2018 in the chapel of Sterling Funeral Home, 602 N. Main Street, Dayton, Texas. A graveside service and committal will be held at 11am on Wednesday, January 3, 2017 in the Stubbs Cemetery on Gou Hole Road in Cove, Texas.
