CONOVER Richard Lloyd Hefner, 86, of Conover, passed away Thursday, Dec. 28, 2017, at Frye Regional Medical Center. He was born March 28, 1931, in Catawba County, to the late Mernie and Lucille Sigmon Hefner. Richard was a lifetime member of Mt. Zion Lutheran Church in Conover. He was a United States Air Force veteran serving as an airplane mechanic. Richard enjoyed gardening, golfing, high school football, and church softball. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Lillian Stroud Hefner; and sister, Doris Waters. Those left to cherish his memory are sons, Barclay Hefner and wife, Jennie of Hickory, Scott Hefner of Conover; daughter, Pat Hefner Killian and husband, Mark of Conover; grandchildren, Crystal Killian Witherspoon and husband, Matthew, Sarah Killian, Clay Hefner and wife, Roni-Leigh, Blake Hefner and wife, Jessica, Rachel Hefner Quarles and husband, Matt, Emily Hefner; great-grandchildren, Kate Witherspoon and Emmett Quarles; a special friend, Betty Spencer. A service to celebrate Richard's life will be held Monday, Jan. 1, 2018, at 3 p.m., at Mt. Zion Lutheran Church in Conover. The Rev. Robert Hunter Shoffner will officiate. Burial with military honors by American Legion Post 48 will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday, Jan. 1, from 1 to 2:45 p.m., at Mt. Zion Lutheran Church. Those serving as pallbearers are Randy Hefner, Blake Hefner, Matt Witherspoon, Matt Quarles, Clay Hefner and Dave Waters.
