Phyllis Jean (Barrett) Novinger passed away on Monday, December 25, 2017 in Shenandoah, IA at the age of 88 years old.

Phyllis was born in Shenandoah, IA on April 27, 1929, the thirteenth child of George and Sarah (Martin) Barrett. Phyllis was a lifelong member of the Community of Christ Church where she enjoyed being an active member. While roller skating in Clarinda, Iowa she met her future husband John B. Novinger. John told many people how he instantly admired her poise and grace and knew then he would marry her someday. Their relationship blossomed and they were married at the Community of Christ Church in Shenandoah, IA on July 3, 1949. As newlyweds they lived in Bedford, IA returning to Shenandoah in 1951 where they remained for the rest of their lives. John and Phyllis enjoyed traveling throughout the United States after John's retirement. Phyllis was employed at Spurgeon's in Shenandoah for several years. She was a skilled gardener, and generously shared her beautiful roses and flower arrangements with family, friends and her church congregation. Everyone who knew Phyllis was aware of how much she loved her family including her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. All her grandchildren knew how much Grandma loved them because she always told them that they were perfect and that she loved them a "whole bunch". All of Phyllis' family and friends loved her specialty "Novinger Chocolate Cake" and cherry pies.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband John B. Novinger on December 6, 2011.

She leaves behind three children: Helen Louise Novinger (Robert Hoeglund) of Colorado, John W. (Bill) Novinger (Cindy) of Shenandoah, IA and Ross William Novinger (Glenda) of Idaho. She has eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
