Elijah Buck, Sr. was a storekeeper, also was Justice of the Peace. He was the first Postmaster (1 April 1801) of Chemung, NY, it was originally called Buckville. He served in the Revolutionary War from 2 Aug. 1779-25 Jan. 1780, serving in Col. Zebulon Butlers Regiment, Captain David Parsons Company 2nd Conn. Regiment.
The house that is now occupied by Lock 52 Historical Society of Port Byron was once a single-family residence built somewhere around the 1820's and the 1840's on land that was once owned by Elijah Buck. It has not been substantiated as to who built the first structure.
The Historical Society has turned the house into a museum which contains maps, pictures, tools, household items, furniture, clothing, etc. pertaining to the history of the Village of Port Byron
