William W. Van Meter, 91, long time resident of Kent and Brimfield, ascended into glory December 23, 2017, at Brookdale Senior Living in Stow. William was born in Monroe County, Ohio, to George and Anna Van Meter on June 23, 1926. Soon after graduating from high school, he enlisted in the United States Navy and served honorably from 1944 to 1946, earning the Victory Medal for his wartime service in both the Pacific and Atlantic theaters.

William married his first wife, Grace Carpenter, in 1951 and moved to Akron, where he began a long and distinguished career with the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. After retiring from Goodyear with nearly 40 years of service, William married his second wife, Vera Shreffler, in 1991 and together they volunteered several days a week for many years at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna. William and Vera were devoted members of the Faith United Methodist Church in Brimfield.

William enjoyed a spirited game of Euchre, tinkering in the garage and tending a garden, following Rough Rider sports, bowling, a good Bob Evans’ breakfast, John Wayne movies, and staying off the grid and scribing hand-written letters. He once was elected as the Senior Fair King at the Portage County Fair. For Thanksgiving 2017, William experienced the gathering of four generations of Van Meters and met his great-grandsons, Jordy and Luke, for the first time.

William is preceded in death by his parents George and Anna, sister Mary Anderson, wife Grace, and daughter-in-law Alice.

William is survived by his current wife Vera; sister Sarah Stephen; sons Keith and Mark (Laurie); step-children Ken (Elisabeth) Shreffler, Lawrence (Deborah) Shreffler, and Judy (Greg) Horan; nine grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held at Wood-Kortright-Borkoski Funeral Home in Ravenna on Thursday, December 28, 2017, from 1:00 – 2:30 PM. A memorial service with military honors will begin promptly at 2:30 PM. A fellowship reception will immediately follow. Burial will be on Friday, December 29, 2017, at Standing Rock Cemetery at 11:00 AM. Flowers are welcome, but please consider making a memorial donation in William’s name to your local hospice or a charity of your choosing instead.

William’s family extends their gratitude to the caring staff of Brookdale Senior Living and Brookdale Hospice for their kindness and support during his transition into eternity.
