Charles William Blake, passed away December 10, 2017, at Hospice of the Panhandle, in Martinsburg, West Virginia.
He was born October 8, 1940, in Charleston, (Campbells Creek), West Virginia, the son of the late Renis D. and Phoebe K. Harmon.
He is survived by wife Carol Travis Blake and daughters Dr. Cara B. Lott (James), Christen Hull (Rick), and son Travis Blake (Desiree'); grandchildren Trey and Blake Hull, as well as Savanna, Maya and Ellie Blake; brother Arthur (Becky); and sister Mrs. Glen Rinehart; as well as several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his daughter, Candi Yvette Blake.
Charles graduated in 1959 from DuPont High School and attended Marshall University on a basketball scholarship. In 1963, he played quarterback at West Virginia State College. Charles and Carol were married November 2, 1962. Charles graduated from Morris Harvey College in 1965 and taught in Kanawha County schools. Charles was later employed by O.K. Trucking and transferred to Belpre, Ohio, where he and Carol lived for 37 years. Charles became Terminal Manager while working for O.K. and was a member of the Mid-Ohio Valley Traffic Club. After retiring from O.K. Trucking, Charles began a second career with Shell Chemical / Kraton Polymers in Belpre, where he retired after 22 years of service. Charles also worked on his farm raising Black Angus cattle. He was member of Rockland United Methodist.
Charles loved to be a volunteer. He was a volunteer coach for football, basketball, baseball and the Belpre swim team. A past player of his wrote, "A great honest man who cared for everyone and listened when a young person spoke." Another wrote, "He had a genuine care and concern for all he coached and everyone, no matter who they were." That was his legacy, coaching and teaching young people his old-school rules for success in life. More than anything, Charles loved his family and was so proud of his children and grandchildren for their accomplishments and having God in their lives.
After retiring, he and his wife, Carol, moved to their home near the Greenbrier River to enjoy their retirements. During their vacations and travels, Charles would say to people "I'm from West Virginia and I am a 'creeker'!"
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. December 16 at Spring Fork Missionary Baptist Church, 320 Campbells Creek Drive, Charleston, WV. A reception will be held following the service at the church. Interment will be at Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans, WV.
Visitation will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. December 15 at Leavitt Funeral Home, 403 7th Street, Parkersburg, WV 26101.
