Meredith was the son of Martin Denney and Sarah Monroe, who married on 16 Mar 1837. Because Sarah died eight years before the 1900 Census was enumerated, we miss her telling us how many children she had. Eight children appeared with the couple on census records—Mary E. (ca. 1838), (son) Meredith (22 Feb 1840 – 18 Jan 1910), Harriet (ca. 1843), Jasper/Joseph (ca. 1845), Eliza (ca. 1850), Sarah J. (ca. 1852), Minerva (ca. 1856), and Angeline (ca. 1859).

I found the family on the 1850 Census, living in Clay Township, Kosciusko Co., Indiana. Martin Denney, aged 32, was engaged in agriculture. Sarah, aged 30, was home with their five children—Mary, aged 12, Meredith, aged 10, Harriet, aged 7, Jasper, aged 5, and Eliza, not yet a year old. Also living with the family was Jacob B. Pries, a 26-year-old carpenter.

The family was still in Clay Township when the 1860 Census came around. Martin Denney, aged 43, was busy farming. Sarah, aged 41, had her hands full at home with their seven children—Meredith, aged 20, Harriet, aged 17, Joseph (Jasper?), aged 15, Eliza, aged 10, Sarah, aged 8, Minerva, aged 4, and Angeline, aged 1.

A few months after that census was enumerated, Meredith married Elizabeth Ann Epler on 26 Apr 1860 in Kosciusko Co., Indiana. According to Elizabeth in both 1900 and 1910, the couple had eleven children together. I found names and dates for only eight—Alvin Francis (13 Jan 1862 – 7 Nov 1918), Sarah Ann (3 Feb 1865 – 23 Jun 1936), George Wesley (24 Feb 1867 – 13 Oct 1944), William E. (Aug 1869 – 25 Aug 1941), Joseph Ezra (1872 – 1926), Lloyd Elmer (20 Mar 1878 – 23 Jan 1962), John Oscar (12 Mar 1883 – 19 Apr 1918), and Delta (29 Dec 1884 – 15 Mar 1965).

I found the family on the 1870 Census, living in Harrison Township, Kosciusko Co., Indiana. Meredith, aged 30, was engaged in farm labor. Elizabeth, aged 27, was tending to their four children—Francis (aka Alvin), aged 8, Sarah, aged 5, George, aged 3, and William, aged 1.

The 1880 Census placed the family in Lake Township in Kosciusko County. Meredith Denney, aged 40, was busy farming. Elizabeth, aged 37, was keeping house, a house that included six children—Alvin, aged 17, Sarah, aged 15, George, aged 13, William, aged 11, Ezra, aged 9, and Lloyd, aged 3. Son John would join the family about three years later.

If the 1890 Census were still around, it would have been the only record on which son John would have appeared. By the 1900 Census, he was already out on his own. The rest of the family was zoned into Jackson Township in Kosciusko County. Meredith Denney, aged 60, was noted as a nursery salesman. Elizabeth, aged 57, reported that she had had eleven children, but that only eight had survived to that census. Only three children were still living at home—Wesley (aka George), aged 33 and noted as a hay merchant, Lloyd, aged 22 and noted as a day laborer, and Delta, aged 15 and attending school.

Eighteen days into a new year and a new decade, Meredith Denney died on 18 Jan 1910 at age 69. Meredith’s wife Elizabeth lived another eighteen years without him, not passing into the light until 18 Nov 1928.
