Melvin Vinton "Mel" Cottrill, 74, of Chillicothe, died 1:45 p.m. Friday, December 8, 2017 in Adena Regional Medical Center following a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born March 30, 1943 in Radcliff, OH, to Carl and Thelma Gregory Cottrill. On August 17, 1996, he married the former Sandy Alexander, who survives.

Also surviving are five children; eleven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law also several nieces, a great niece, great nephews and a special friend, Lori, of Chillicothe. He was predeceased by his father, Carl Cottrill; mother Thelma Cottrill (Leitch) and step father George Leitch; sister and brother-in-law, Janice and Max Jolly; and former wife and mother of his three daughters, Carolyn (McManus) Cottrill.

Mel graduated from Wilton High School in Wilkesville OH in 1960. Mel was a hard working man who held many jobs. For many years, he farmed in Vinton County while working full time in electrical and maintenance departments in several factories including; Timken Roller Bearing in Columbus, Anheuser Busch in Westerville, The Piketon Atomic Plant and finally his final employer which he retired from Thomson Consumer Electronic ( RCA) in Circleville as a maintenance Coordinator in 2005. Along his journey through life, he gathered a large, life long circle of friends that he cherished. The past few years, his illness made keeping in contact with friends more difficult but they were still on his mind and in his heart. He loved his family, his friends, and was especially fond of his pets. He was known to be able to fix about anything mechanical and enjoyed the challenge of trying. After retirement, he spent many hours repairing and rebuilding automobiles in a garage full of old time country music and looked forward to 4 o'clock quitting time where happy hour came to him. He treated his family with open arms and also opened his arms to anyone who might have needed someone to care. He was kind, generous, giving and fearless. He was loved by many and he cared about his friends like they too were family. He was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 1626 and F.O.E. Aires 600.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, December 14, 2017 in the WARE FUNERAL HOME. Burial will follow in Hamden Cemetery. Friends may call at the Ware Funeral Home from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.
