Edgar was born November 14, 1919, at the rural farm home of his parents,
William F. and Martha (Berghoefer) Dorow, who lived northeast of Garner, in
Concord Township. He was baptized at St. John’s Lutheran Church. Edgar
graduated from Ventura Consolidated Community High School, graduating as
valedictorian, in 1938. Edgar served in the United States Army Air Force in
World War II 1942-46. He served in the financial offices in Algeria and was
discharged at the rank of Staff Sergeant.

After the war, he attended Iowa State University in Ames, graduating with a
Bachelor of Science in Animal Husbandry in 1948. He was the Extension Director
of Dickinson County from 1948-52.

In Spirit Lake he met his future wife, Dorcas Byro. They married in Eagle
Grove on June 28, 1953. They had two children, Martha in 1958 and Joel in
1960. In June, 1952, Edgar moved to Osage, and served as Extension Director of
Mitchell County until his retirement in 1983.

In his work, Edgar was always present at the Mitchell County Fair, supported
the 4-H programs, and forwarded best practices in agriculture and animal
husbandry. He was a leader in a state-wide well water decontamination program
in the 1970’s.

Edgar’s community activities included serving as a board member and president
of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, as well as Sunday School teacher and
superintendent. Edgar was president of the Mitchell County chapter of the
American Cancer Society, and county chairman of the annual CROP walk
fundraiser. He was a long-term member of the Osage Rotary Club.

After his retirement, Edgar continued his community activities and devoted
much of his time to a small acreage in Howard County. Edgar also traveled
extensively with his wife on international good-will tours. One of his more
memorable trips was leading a group of Iowa farm leaders on a world-wide
‘People-to-People’ farm tour in China, Russia and Europe.

Edgar is survived by his daughter, Martha Dorow of St. Paul, Minnesota; his
son, Joel (Miriam Chilton) Dorow, of Montclair, New Jersey; and grandchildren,

Arden Hills, Minnesota and Winton (Tavita), of Lubbock, Texas.
