Phyllis June Mason, a former Boyd resident, died Thursday, Jan. 26, 2012, at her daughter Teresa's home in Celina after suffering through several bouts of pneumonia. Celebration of life: A service for Phyllis will be announced at a later date. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Phyllis to the American Lung Association or the Alzheimer's Association. Phyllis was born in Tennyson, Ind., on June 15, 1933, the 11th of 12 children born to Lula and Purtel Abshier. Phyllis worked a full-time job from the age of 18 up until the age of 76, failing three separate attempts at retirement and a life of leisure. An illness finally forced her to give up her passion for her work and coworkers at Decatur Hospital just two years ago. Up until that time she was an active member of Walnut Grove Church in Azle, a member of the Honey-Do RV Club, and a founding member of the Red Hat Society in Boyd. Shortly after losing her husband, Jack Mason, of Boyd and son, Michael James of Irving, Phyllis moved to Leesburg, Va., to live with her daughter, Janice James and son-in-law, Philip Marlow. After two cold winters, Phyllis finally fulfilled her dream to return to Texas in December 2011. Phyllis was a best friend and devoted mother to her four children, Janice, Stephen, Michael and Teresa. She was known as "Mom" by many of her children’s friends during their teen years, always understanding and supportive of their challenges. She also never met a stray dog or cat she didn't end up adopting. Survivors: She is survived by her sisters, Wanda Mae and Lynda; her children, Janice (Philip Marlow), Steve, and Teresa (Dirk Heppel); loving granddaughters, Casey James and Haylee Heppel; great-grandchildren, Callye and Chase; and her dog, Max.
