Obituary in The Shreveport (LA) Times October 31, 2003:

SHREVEPORT, LA - Dala Watson Smith died while at his home Monday, October 27, 2003. Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 1, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel at Osborn Funeral Home. Officiating will be Dr. Pat Day of First United Methodist Church with interment to follow at Forest Park Cemetery.

Dala was born the youngest of three children on April 22, 1928 in Winder, Georgia. He attended Winder High School and the University of Georgia in Athens where he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. During College he served his country in the Medical Corps in Japan, and then returned to graduate from UGA in 1951. While working for the Aetna Life Insurance Company he moved to Shreveport where he met his wife of 48 years, Betty Jane Beene. He then, in conjunction with friend Pierce L. Graham, founded Cherokee Construction Company and remained as President until his retirement in 1994.

Dala was an avid golfer at the Shreveport Country Club and was a member of the Mississippi Seniors Association. He enjoyed following the careers of many local golfers and he himself played on many courses around the country and was thrilled when he played the course at St. Andrews in Scotland. He loved good wine, playing gin rummy with friends and family and especially rooting for the Georgia Bulldogs, LSU Tigers (unless they played Georgia!) and the Atlanta Braves. He served on the boards of many professional associations including The Haynesville Mercantile Corporation, the Shreveport Chapter of the Association of General Contractors and The Volunteers of America. Dala also became an advisor and confidant to many friends and neighbors.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Denta Watson Smith and Herschel Willoughby Smith; brother, George Smith; and nephew, George Thompson, whom he dearly loved. In addition to his wife, Betty Smith, he is survived by his two children: son, James Dala Smith; daughter, Katherine Marie Smith, both of Shreveport; his sister, JoAnn Montgomery, of Winder, GA; his many nieces and nephews and special family friend, Miss Marie Lott. He will also be missed by his beloved dog, Buddy.

Pallbearers will be Jim Nichols, Loy Beene Moore, Clarence Wells, H. D. Gray, Bill Broyles, Billy Wilder, Buzz Lee and Lee Sutton.

The family would like to send special thanks to Dr. Danny Payne, Bill Broyles, Jr., Ms. Lu Brow at the LSU emergency room staff for all their care, dedication and concern. We'll miss you Uncle Dala. We'll miss you Big D. You were our rock.
