She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Vernon Steeves. She is also survived by her three daughters Patty Wilber (Jim), Carol Lourenco (Lynn) and Nancy Shamberger (Bob); grandchildren Paula (Wilber) Exline and her spouse Jerry Koval, Tom Wilber, David Lourenco (Molly), Andra (Lourenco) Stringer (Keith), Robert Shamberger (Susan) and Don Shamberger; great grandchildren Malachi, Nacisohn, Noah and Sara Exline; Sydney, Samantha and Sophie Stringer; Nolan and mason Lourenco and Robert Shamberger III. Hazel also had a special place in her heart for the children she helped raise: Albert and David Bartow, Ron Boone and Buck Jackson. These boys were like the sons she never had. Ron and Cassandra Boone have two children (Jeff and Caroline) that thought of her as grandma. Hazel also leaves behind one sister, Pauline Davis, nieces Caroline Weed, Rose Fisher, Betty Shamberger, Barbara Jones; nephews Bob Steeves, Elmer Steeves, Jr., and Albert Bartow; cousin Bob Hawks and many other nieces and nephews.
Hazel was preceded in death by her father and mother, John and Caroline Bartow; brothers, Albert, Harry, Johnny and Danny Bartow; sisters, Myrtle Fisher, Mildred Steeves and Sally Morton.
Hazel loved to go camping with her family in the mountains. These were favorite times for her. She loved being a grandmother and great grandmother. Hazel was born and raised in McKinleyville. Her dad, John Bartow, was also born in McKinleyville and was the great grandson of Asa White, who started the First Methodist Church in Arcata in a tent.
Graveside services will be held at Greenwood Cemetery on Tuesday, March 16th at 1:30 PM. The family will hold a gathering at Dows Prairie Grange following the service.
