John and Essie started married life in Salt Lake where he worked as a plumber according to his World War I registration card. The card also notes that John was of slender build and medium height with blue eyes and brown hair.
John and Essie's first five children were born in Salt Lake City. The final three were born in Los Angeles as the family moved there in the early 1920s. The 1940 Census shows them in San Bernardino and John's World War II registration card show them in San Diego in 1942.

John S. Cox, 74, a retired plumber and a resident here 12 years, died Tuesday in his home, 4346 Kansas St.
Survivors are his widow, Essie; two sons, William Cox, of La Mesa, and Waldow Cox, of San Diego; five daughters, Mrs. Helen Biggs of San Diego, Mrs. Willma Widner and Mrs. Hazel Townsend of La Mesa, Mrs. Eula Stuart of San Diego, and Mrs. Iola Waters of National City, and 11 grandchildren.
Services will be conducted at 3 p.m. tomorrow in Greenwood Mortuary, with burial to be in Greenwood Cemetery.
