Vermont Judge. He graduated from Peoples Academy, and received bachelor's (1883) and master's (1886) degrees from the University of Vermont. He studied law with his father and Philip K. Gleed, attained admission to the bar in 1886, and practiced in Morrisville. A Republican, he served in the 1880s and 1890s as Assistant Clerk of the Vermont House of Representatives, Lamoille County State's Attorney, and Secretary of the Vermont Senate. From 1902 to 1904 he was the Reporter of Decisions for the Vermont Supreme Court. In 1904 he was appointed as an Associate Justice of the state Supreme Court, and he served until his position was eliminated in 1906. He served on the Vermont Superior Court from 1906 to 1909, and was again appointed to the Supreme Court in 1909. He served as an Associate Justice from 1909 to 1913, and was Chief Justice from 1913 to 1915. He was again appointed an Associate Justice in 1915, and served until 1929, when he was again appointed Chief Justice. He served as Chief Justice from 1929 until his death.
