Born September 19, 1918, in Gaston County, NC; daughter of the late Clarence Sylvanus Eaker (1882–1944) and Dovie Elizabeth Craft Eaker (1883–1963); wife of the late Warren Ralph Smith (1920–1985).
Graduated from Cherryville High School in 1938, attended East Carolina where she played basketball, was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church where she held almost every position available, but was most proud of her work as treasurer and financial secretary; and retired from Belk Matthews in Cherryville with 38 years of service.
Enjoyed traveling, gardening, canning, and loved animals; was a talented crafter, and enjoyed crochet and needlepoint; will always be remembered for making the best Coca Cola Cake ever; thoroughly enjoyed her time at Carolina Care and loved to take part in their activities; was best known as dressing as the Cat at Halloween. Kate had just celebrated her 99th birthday in September and she had a great love for life.
Survivors include her nieces and nephews whom she considered her children, Carolyn Borden, Bruce Eaker, Robert Eaker, Jon Eaker, Chip Eaker, David Eaker, Seburn Crocker, Dean Crocker, Gail Canipe, Lois Armstrong, Patsy Rountree, David Smith, Rita Beam, Gary Smith, Mickey Smith, Phillip Smith, and Steven Smith; and numerous great nieces and nephews; and great-great nieces and nephews.
Also preceded in death by her siblings, Ernest A Eaker (1906–1908), Annie Mazelle Eaker Baird (1909–1996), Roy Craft Eaker (1912–1984), and Carl Spurgeon Eaker (1916–1996).
Funeral services were held at 11:00 am, Thursday, November 30, 2017, at Bethlehem United Methodist Church with Rev. Randi Godfrey officiating; the burial was in the church cemetery.
The family received friends from 10:00-10:45 am in the fellowship hall prior to the service.
