Daniel Horton, Jr. would have been liable for military duty at the begining (sic) of the Revolutionary war, being under 50 years of age (g) and therefore would have been enrolled in 1775 in Capt. John Hyatt's Co. in the Third or Cortlandt Manor Regiment. (h) By 1782 when the "Land and Bounty Rights order" was issued, he would have been too old for duty. And therefore exempt. (g)
It is stated in a County history that "Daniel Horton of Yorktown, a respectable citizen, was captured by the British and carried some distance, but was recaptured by Elijah and Enos Lee and Josiah Ingersoll, brother-in-law of Mr. Horton." (o)
The history is in error, however, in making the statement that Daniel Horton lived on what was formerly the Hickson Covert farm. That farm belonged to his brother Stephen, and probably Daniel was confused with his father Daniel4 Horton who is supposed to have lived there and who died in 1777 aged over 80. (j)
Daniel Horton, Jr. was a member of the Crumpond Presbyterian Church at the time the Rev. Silas Constant was settled there, after the Revolution, and was undoubtedly a member under the pastorate of Mr. Constant's predecessor. Later dissention arose in the congregation under Mr. Constant and he formed a new church. Daniel Horton remained with the old congregation, and with Abraham Purdy was one of the elders. (k)
The earmark of the cattle of Daniel Horton, Jr. was entered on the Town Book of Cortlandt Manor Aug. 21, 1770. (l) His father was then called Daniel, Senior.
He served as a juror at the Court of Common Pleas, held at Bedford in Nov. 1784 (m) and on Dec. 1, 1786 the Rev. Silas Constant visited at his home. (n) He was listed in the Census of 1790 as having in his household one male under 16, and 2 females. The Census of 1800 gives Daniel and his wife, both over 45, one soon between 16-26, and one daughter between 26-45. In the 1810 Census neither Daniel nor his wife are listed. (o)
