The Rev. James J. Burdess, pastor, St. Joseph Parish, Summit Hill, passed away Nov. 19 at Holy Family Villa for Priests, Bethlehem. He was 59 years of age.

Born in Pottsville, Father Burdess was a son of the late Robert J. and Ann Marie Mokelar Burdess Szalku.

Father Burdess attended St. Patrick Elementary School, Pottsville; St. Mary Elementary School, Saint Clair; and is a graduate of Nativity BVM High School, Pottsville. He attended Pennsylvania State University where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting, and Mary Immaculate Seminary, Northampton, where he received a Masters of Divinity Degree and a Masters of Theology Degree.

He was ordained to the priesthood on June 4, 1988, by the Most Rev. Thomas J. Welsh, Bishop of Allentown, at the Cathedral Church of St. Catharine of Siena, Allentown. Father Burdess' first priestly assignment was parochial vicar, Sacred Heart Parish, Allentown, followed by parochial vicar, St. Peter Parish, Coplay, and parochial vicar, St. Joseph the Worker Parish, Orefield. His first pastoral assignment was Ss. Peter and Paul Parish, Tower City, followed by pastor, Immaculate Conception Parish, Tremont; pastor, St. Nicholas Parish, Weatherly; and pastor, St. Joseph Parish and the former St. Stanislaus Parish, Summit Hill.

During the course of his priestly ministry, Father Burdess served as CCD regional coordinator, Lehigh County; advocate, Diocesan Tribunal; member, Diocesan Ecumenical Commission; and member, Marian High School Advisory Board.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Michael Burdess and Stephen Burdess; stepbrothers, Frank Szalku, Raymond Szalku and Peter Szalku.

He is survived by brothers, Robert Burdess, Edgewood, Md., and Joseph Burdess and his wife, Beverly, Saint Clair; half-sisters,Terri Barvitskie, Phoenixville, and Tracey Weigel, Camp Hill; sister-in-law, Cheryl Burdess, Saint Clair; nieces, nephews, great-nieces and -nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Father Burdess will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Church, 462 W. Ludlow St., Summit Hill. The main celebrant will be the Most Rev. Alfred A. Schlert, D.D., J.C.L., Bishop of Allentown. The homilist will be the Most Rev. William C. Skurla, Metropolitan Archbishop, Byzantine Catholic Archeparchy of Pittsburgh. Main concelebrants will be Monsignor David L. James, vicar general; Monsignor Gerald E. Gobitas, secretary for clergy, chancellor and rector, Holy Family Villa; Monsignor Edward R. Domin, pastor, St. Catharine of Siena Parish, Reading; the Rev. Allen J. Hoffa, administrator, St. Joseph Parish, Summit Hill; the Rev. John J.L. Little, Holy Family Villa for Priests, Bethlehem; the Rev. Bernard J. Ezaki, parochial vicar, St. Jane Frances de Chantal Parish, Easton; and the Most Rev. William C. Skurla. A vigil service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Sunday in St. Joseph Church, Summit Hill. Monsignor John G. Chizmar, vicar forane, Carbon Deanery and pastor, St. Peter the Fisherman Parish, Lake Harmony, will preside. The homilist will be the Rev. Bernard J. Ezaki. Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday and from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday before Mass in the church. Interment will take place in St. Joseph Cemetery, White Bear, Summit Hill.
