Murphy woman killed in wreck
Times-Courier (Ellijay, GA) - Wednesday, November 22, 2017

A Murphy, N.C., woman was killed in a two-car collision in Ellijay Sunday afternoon, authorities said.

Betty Scott Hampton, 72, lost control of the Toyota Camry she was driving on Highway 382 just west of Sunlight Road and veered into the path of an SUV, said Gilmer County Coroner Jerry Hensley.

Hensley said Hampton died at the scene of the crash that was reported at 12:39 p.m., according to a Gilmer County Sheriff's Office Facebook post.

Fire/EMA Chief Tony Pritchett said two people in the SUV with a Gilmer license plate were taken by ambulance to Piedmont Mountainside Hospital in Jasper. He did not know their names.
A Georgia State Patrol report was not completed by Tuesday morning.

Betty Carol Hampton, age 72, of Murphy, NC, passed away Sunday, Nov. 19, 2017.

She was born in Jackson County, AL to the late James and Alice Akins Liles. Betty was a homemaker. Betty was a loving, caring, and kind woman. She was so full of happiness that her smile would light up a room. Betty was a devout Christian and wanted to tell everyone she knew about her Lord and Savior. She loved to sing, especially in church, she had a voice of an angel.

She is survived by her husband, Kendall Hampton; one son, Kevin Scott and wife Michelle of Birmingham; one daughter, Selena Matthews and husband Chris of Ashville; grandchildren, Emily Capps, Heather Williams and husband Alan, Laura Young, Jessica McCormick and husband Jason, Hunter Scott, Ryan Matthews and Riley Matthews; great-grandchildren, Zoee Williams and Finn Young; two sisters, Jean Taylor of Hoover and Ann Bonds and husband Gene of Albertville; two brothers, Melvin Liles of Huntsville, AL and Royce Liles and wife Beverly of Huntsville, AL; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2017 at the Shiloh Baptist Church in Hayesville. The Rev. Clark Moss and the Rev. L.B. Adams will officiate. Burial will be in the Hanging Dog Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2017 at the Townson-Rose Funeral Home in Murphy, North Carolina.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Susan G. Komen, Dept. 41831, P.O. Box 650309, Dallas, TX 75265 for Breast Cancer.

Townson-Rose Funeral Home is in charge of all arrangements.
