William M. Smith, 89, of Virginia Beach, died April 11, 1995, in Virginia Beach.

Mr. Smith retired from General Motors Acceptance Corp. in 1970 as branch manager in Norfolk after 37 years of service. Mr. Smith was born in Stanley County near Albemarle, N.C., in 1905. He attended N.C. State University and began his career with GMAC in 1933. After World War II, Mr. Smith was transferred to Columbia, S.C., where he rose to assistant branch manager. In 1954, he was promoted to branch manager and transferred to Nashville, Tenn. He was subsequently assigned the larger operation in Norfolk, Va., in 1957, where he served until 1970.

Mr. Smith was a member of Bayside Baptist Church, Elizabeth Masonic Lodge (NU)34, AF & AM and Scottish Rite Khedive Temple. He was also an associate member of the Fraternal Order of Police and senior member of Kiwanis, having served 38 years. He was awarded life membership in Kiwanis International by the Norfolk Kiwanis Club for his contributions to his club and community.

The second oldest of 15 children, Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Lucille W. Smith; one daughter, Sandra Lee Smith Duckworth of Alexandria, Va.; one son, Capt. J. Monroe Smith, USN (Ret.) of Virginia Beach; two sisters, Mrs. Thelma Efird and Mrs. E.J. Honeycutt, both of Albemarle, N.C.; two brothers, C.J. and D.J. Smith, both of Albemarle, N.C.; stepmother, Stella M. Smith, and half-sister, Hilda Velasquez, both of Fort Washington, Md.; two half-brothers, Everett R. Smith of Conetoe, N.C., and Gerald M. Smith of Greensboro, N.C.; four grandchildren, John M. Smith Jr. of Glendale, Calif., Clifford Duckworth of Portland, Ore., Laura L. Duckworth of Virginia Beach and Brent C. Duckworth of Alexandria.

The family will receive friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel, from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday. A funeral service will be conducted at the same location Saturday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Dr. Ralph M. Halliwill and the Rev. Bruce Minett. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. Contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.
