Deceased Taught In the Local Schools Many Years Ago


Dr. A. R. Wittman, 79, former Manitowoc resident and three times mayor of Merrill, died suddenly following a stroke at his home in that city late Wednesday. Despite his advanced age, he as active in the practice of medicine until the time of death.

Survivors are four sons, Herman of Superior, Arthur of Manila, P. I., Walter E and Carl both of Merrill; a daughter, Gerda of Milwaukee; a brother, Rudolp of Manitowoc, and a sister, Mrs. T. Mueller of Milwaukee.

Dr. Wittman was a civic leader in Merrill for years. He served on the Board of Education, City Council, and as health commissioner before his first election as mayor. He was widely known as an Indian relic collector and naturalist.

He was born in Manitowoc in 1859. He attended the University of Wisconsin, where at the age of 15 years he was the youngest Freshman in his class. He later taught school at Two Rivers and for a time was principal of the local public schools.

He received his medical education at Rush Medical college, Chicago, and opened his first office in Merrill, where he practiced the rest of his life.

During the World War Dr. Wittman volunteered and was place in the reserve officers medical corps.

The following Kiel people attended the funeral; Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph Heins and son, Richard, Albert Laun, and Mrs. William Kohl of Sheboygan.
