Joseph came to Omaha in the early 1860's. In 1863 he partnered with John Green to purchase a brewery between 6th and 7th Sts at Leavenworth. In 1864 he sold the company to Metz & Brothers. In 1865 he built another plant in North Omaha named Columbia Brewery. In 1876 he brought an immigrant named Gottlieb Storz from Germany to be a foreman in the brewery. On his way to greet Gottlieb at the train station Joseph was involved in a carriage accident and never recovered.
