She was born December 11, 1922 in her parents home in Alborn, MN. After graduating in 1942 from Alborn High School she worked as a grocery store clerk. Esther married Charles H. Barber on December 26, 1942 in Duluth. She worked for Linton Industries and Nopeming nursing home as a nurse's aid and had also been a home health care provider.
Esther helped take care of their hobby farm. She believed in hanging the wash on the line outdoors, even in the winter, which may have led to her debilitating arthritis. Esther enjoyed gardening, making quilts for all the family, cooking, baking and Vikings football.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Johannes and Johanna (Bach) Ostman; her husband of 60 ½ years, Charles Joe Barber; two sisters Gunhild Carlstrom and Olga Pedersen; six brothers, Isadore, Walford, Ted, Albert, Gunnar and Verner.
She is survived by her sons: Robert (Connie), and David (Joan); daughter, Diane (Dirk) Carlson; grandchildren: Ronald (Mary) Carlson, Jeff (Sarah) Carlson Emily (Chris) Benser, Laura (Jason) Stewart; and five great grandchildren.
Interment in the Augustana Lutheran Cemetery next to her husband, Charles.
