John was the son of Henry Charles and Nancy Jane Wilson Denues. In 1898, he married Cora B. Croynon. They were the parents of Robert L. Denues, Edna Irene Denues, and Charles Denues. According his obituary in the Ashland Daily Independent on 16 August 1932, he "was one of the best known men in this city {Olive Hill} and had long been identified with the business life of the community and the news of his death came as a distinct shock to his relatives and friends."
He was survived by his sons and daughter, who was the wife of W. E. Miller of Cynthiana and her daughter, Johhie B. He also left behind grandchildren, Dorothy Denues and Billie Denues. In addition, he was survived by two brothers, Henry H. of Ashland and Charles H., of Lexington, and two sisters, Bertha Allen and Laura Webb of Guthrie, Oklahoma. Funeral services were held at the Methodist Episcopal Church in Olive Hill with the Rev. Logadon officiating.
