He was the son of Nils Larsson Uhlin and Neta (Pålsdotter) Uhlin. The Uhlins had long lived in Ysby, Halland, Sweden, but Werner grew up near Oskarström and then in Helsingborg before emigrating to USA. He arrived at the Port of Boston on August 4, 1910 to join his brothers Hjalmar and Karl (Carl) in Waltham. He worked for the Waltham Watch Company, and also repaired clocks in his own home.
