US Congressman. Moving with his parents to Decorah, Iowa, in 1853, at age 17 he was the city’s first school teacher. He also engaged in banking and was treasurer and recorder of Winneshiek County, (1854-62). During the Civil War, he served as a Captain in the 6th Regiment, Iowa Volunteer Cavalry, Union Army, in the Department of the Northwest. After the war, he became head cashier of the First National Bank. In 1877, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-fifth Congress, serving until 1879. Declining to be a candidate for re-nomination, he returned to his banking interests and was a member of the Iowa State Senate, (1886-87).
