Josephine "Jo" Teresa Bolen Hoelscher, 89, passed away on Monday, July 18th, 2022, in San Antonio, Texas.
Born on December 17, 1932, in Llano, Texas, Jo was the daughter of Leonard J and Ottilia (Pehl) Bolen.
Jo met the love of her life, Isidore Lewis Hoelscher, also known as" I.L". or "Easy", on a blind date the weekend before Lent. After one and a half years of dating, they were married on November 8, 1949, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in San Angelo, Texas. They settled in the St Laurence farming community in West Texas. During their time at St. Laurence, Jo enjoyed her many nieces and nephews while anxiously awaiting her own children. She was a favorite aunt to many!
In 1958, they moved with their son Mark to southwest Texas, settling first in Eagle Pass, Texas, and then in El Indio, Texas along the Mexico border where they farmed, ranched, and raised their three children, Mark, Michael & Regina (Gina). For family fun, they would hunt arrowheads and have several framed collections. In 1980 the couple moved to Uvalde, Texas, while still farming and ranching in El Indio.
Jo spent many years in El Indio teaching CCD and was a member of the Cow Belles an organization that supported Texas Beef Ranchers. After moving to Uvalde, she decided she wanted to continue to help others, so she went back to school and received her Licensed Vocational Nursing degree on August 27, 1982, from Southwest Texas Junior College. She worked with Dr. Martha Strickland of Uvalde, at Amistad Nursing Home and as a home health care nurse.
Shelling among the Florida beaches was a favorite pastime and Florida was the preferred vacation spot for Jo and Easy. They also enjoyed fishing together and camping. In 1999 they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, where, with family and friends, they renewed their marriage vows. Jo was an active member in the American Legion Post 26 Auxiliary in Uvalde.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Uvalde, Texas before moving to Landon Ridge Alamo Ranch Assisted Living & Memory Care in San Antonio, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Isidore, in 2003; her parents Leonard & Ottilia Bolen; sisters Mary Louise (Lou) Lincecum, Kathryn Jean (Jeannie) Reavis, Ella Joy (Joy) Hoelscher; and brothers Jerry Bolen & Andrew Bolen.
She is survived by her son Mark and wife Sharon of Normal, Illinois; son Mike and wife Candy of Ft Worth, Texas; and daughter Gina Grothues and husband Greg of Lakehills, Texas; eight grandchildren, Rachel Wright and husband Anthony of San Angelo, Matthew Hoelscher and wife Marissa of Lubbock, Raylon Hoelscher and wife Leah of Ballinger, David Hoelscher and wife Erika of Winters, Brian Smith and wife Krista of Cresson, Jamie Price of Mansfield, Kristen Grothues of San Marcos, and Cole Grothues of Lakehills; and ten great-grandchildren, Lyla and Lucy Hoelscher of Lubbock, Grace, Olivia, & Clara Hoelscher of Ballinger, Kaelynn Hoelscher of Winters, Kylie and Zachary Price of Mansfield, Clayton Smith of Cresson, Taylor and husband Tyler Chabot of Albany, Georgia, and one great-great grandson, Decker Chabot of Albany, Georgia.
She is also survived by her brother-in-law Hooper (Frank) Reavis of Sonora; sisters-in-law Dorothy Bolen of Kerrville and Germaine Hoelscher of Rowena.
On Tuesday, July 26th, there will be a visitation at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Bandera at 1 pm, with a Rosary at 2 pm and a Mass of the Resurrection following. A reception will be held after the services.
Interment will be on Wednesday, July 27th, 2022, at Hillcrest Cemetery, Uvalde, Texas with a reception to follow.
