Daughter of T. E. and Pauline Burk, who moved to Monument, New Mexico in 1929. Her grandparents, Dory and Josie Burk were ranchers there.

In 1933 her family movied to Hobbs where Laverne graduated from Hobbs High School in 1944.
After studying at Abilene Christian College in Abilene, Texas, she married Charlie D. Shaw on February 14, 1947 at the Taylor Street Church of Christ in Hobbs. They were the parents of two sons, Lynn and Lane.

She was active in PTA, was a Band Parent and Cub Scout den mother.
She was a secretary at Hobbs High School and a medical secretary for Dr. Don M. Lowry. When her husband went into real estate, she became a bookkeeper and secretary for him.

After retirement, the couple traveled extensively and visited Eurpoe, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, the Caribbean, the British Isles and all 50 states until the health curtailed their travels.

Preceded in death by her parents,; a son, Loren Eric Shaw; and grandson, Ryan Carlton Shaw, all of Hobbs.

Survived by two sons (both doctors); two granddaughters; two great-grandsons; and one great-granddaughter.
