Daniel John Kennaley, IV was the 3rd son and 5th child born to Daniel John Kennaley, III and Kathleen Mary (White)Kennaley on July 21, 1967. He had 7 siblings whose knowledge of books and trivia he persistently challenged. He was the proud father of Samuel Scott Schultz and loving “muncle” to (21) nieces and nephews. Although he’d insisted he didn’t want a party, he was joyfully feted this year on his 50th birthday by family and friends. Danny read every card out loud.
One year Danny declared, “I’m going to read the Bible.” And then he did. From cover to cover.
Danny was a lover of crossword puzzles, books and trivia. He was loquacious, garrulous, verdantly verbose: he liked words. He had a keen knowledge of politics and could unravel what was heard on the news to help his family and friends better understand what was going on in government. He collected stories and odd facts which he spun into elegant and entertaining tales. He was smart, goofy and funny.
Danny’s family enjoyed waterskiing, camping and fishing. One rainy year when Danny was small, tree roots around the lake were bare and wet. That didn’t stop Danny from playing outside! He tumbled over the roots until he was covered in dust like Linus in the Charlie Brown stories. Forever after Danny’s nickname was Mud Ball.
Danny experienced America coast to coast as an over the road truck driver and saw the world with the Air Force. He was stationed in Minot, ND where he proudly served his county as a crew chief mechanic on a KC-135 refueling plane. As his plane soared high over the earth to Guam, Philippines, Korea and many other destinations around the world, Danny would crawled into the bubble and attached the refueling boom to the plane below. Danny’s time in Minot was significant for other, more important reasons: this is where Sam, the heart of Danny’s world, was born. Danny was happiest during the years Sam lived with him in Kansas City.
When Danny was young the whole family gathered on the back deck in south Kansas City to watch storms roll in, flicker and boom. The lightening display was a favored event he enjoyed throughout his life. Bonfires were another favorite – sitting on the driveway until the wee hours of the morning with his little brothers solving all the worlds’ problems.
Danny attended St. Thomas More playing football and soccer. While in elementary school his dad bought a pool table! Danny and his siblings quickly became skilled at billiards. When Sam was in 4th grade, Danny bought him a pool cue to continue the tradition. Every Thanksgiving the whole family participates in a much anticipated, highly competitive tournament for which there’s an engraved trophy and award money! Danny won in 2015.
As his grandfather, father, brothers before him, he graduated from Rockhurst High School in 1985. Here he was involved in wrestling and practiced and perfected his wrestling moves on his little brothers.
Danny was an attentive son. When his father was ill he helped care for him. When his large family descended upon the house for celebrations and holidays, Danny’s mom did the cooking but Danny washed the dishes. He would be “driving Ms. Kitty” his mom to church on Sunday and drove her to ladies’ luncheons and other destinations outside of her ‘4-mile radius’. He challenged her with trivia questions, watched television with her and shared crossword clues.
Surrounded by his family and wrapped in love, words and prayers, Danny rose to heaven unexpectedly on Halloween morning, October 31, 2017. Danny joins his dad, Daniel John Kennaley, III for an eternal duel of odd facts and intrepid tales, camping, fishing – and pool.
The family wishes to thank ICU Unit 63 physicians and nurses at the University of Kansas Medical Center for their care and compassion during his brief 5 days there.
Danny was treasured and beloved and will forever be deeply missed.
