John Mathews Senior was born in Wisconsin, while his parents were born in Prussia in the Alsace-Lorraine area. Since Prussia became defunct parts of Alsace-Lorraine area has had both German and French governance over the years. Different census years has had three county names Prussia, France and Germany listed as where his mother Catherine was born. Possible immigration to the USA by John's parents might have occurred in 1852. John's son John Mathews Jr. said that grandmother Catherine and her husband immigrated shortly before the Civil War. John's father died in the civil war of disease serving at the time in the Wisconsin Cavalry. Their last name might have been "Mathis" which is said to be the German equivalent of the English "Mathews".

John Sr. suffering from TB came to Colorado from Wisconsin for health reasons. He returned to Wisconsin and later returned to Colorado with his mother, sister and brother. John Mathews Sr. was a foreman of one of the crews that built the first historic Georgetown loop. His son John Junior having been born in the Silver Plume train roundhouse 4th of July 1895. Along with working on the railroad John had census occupations listed of farmer, trash hauler for coal mine, and coal miner.

There is a Mathis family listed in the 1860 census for Addison, Washington, Wisconsin that lists Catherine Mathis (mother), and children: Margaret, Mary, Catherine, and Anton. The husband's name on census was listed as "Bathis Mathis" on the census. John Mathews Sr. was very young when his father died and John Mathews Jr. was seven when grandmother Catherine died. Neither John Sr. or Jr. could remember their father (grandfathers) name. I have no proof that this Mathis family is the Mathews family.

The 1870 census has the Mathews family without a father listed, living in Tunnel City Wisconsin. There is a railroad tunnel near Tunnel City; the family might have been involved with the construction of the tunnel or other railroad interests such as boarding men from the railroad. The 1870 Census lists Catherine as "Keeping House". Listed on 1870 census are: Katie Mathews (mother), and children: Maggie, Mary, Catherine, Anthony, and John (born 1863).

The 1870 Mathews family census data matches all the 1860 Mathis family data ages except Anton which has a one year difference.

John lived in many areas in Colorado, at a minimum: Routt, Denver, Gilpin, Larimer, Jefferson, and Boulder counties.

John and John Junior grew tired of the railroad life and took the train to the end of line to Craig, Colorado and proceeded to walk back to Oak Creek, Colorado. They spent one night camping in a small valley along twenty mile road. They looked for homestead areas on the way to Oak Creek. John Senior eventually homesteaded up Little Trout Creek above where the Mule Gulch creek joins Little Trout Creek.

John Sr. married the mother of his children Mary Ann Morton Jan. 28th, 1889. Two of six children from this marriage survived to adulthood. Later divorced by Mary Ann on 17 Feb 1902 in Las Animas County, Colorado, he married Mrs. Effie Miller June 3rd, 1918.

She was granted the pension after the death of John's father while serving in the Wisconsin Cavalry. Note grave marker list year of birth as 1864. The application is all made under the last name of Mathis confirming many verbal hand me down statements on family history.
