Served as a Pvt in Company K of the 150th PA infantry during the Civil War. Became a bodyguard for President Lincoln and by some accounts saved him from assasination in August of 1864. Moved to Omaha in 1866 and became a brickmaker and later a watchman at the Omaha Post Office. He was also a member of the First Volunteer Fire Department in Omaha.
