Jackson Francis Daniel is also known as Jackson Franklin, and Franklin Jackson. He was born to Jackson C. Daniell and Matilda "Patsy" Hamilton in 1848. He is enumerated along with his family, in the 1850 Census of Clarke, Georgia. He was the third of seven children born to them. He was well known as an excellent violin player and a man not to be messed with, with a known temper that "could scare you.". He was 52 years old when my grandmother [Selonia "Lonie" Mae Daniel] was born, and her mother was 42. They had not had a child in seven years, and that daughter Susan Alice, had died very young, so I think her birth was very hard on them. She was married off at the early age of 14, while all of her older brothers and sisters were well into their 20's and even 30's before they were married. When my grandmother was very young, they moved briefly from Georgia to Florida, near the Charlotte County/Englewood area, for about a year or two, (near where the train ended at the time) but the economy crashed shortly thereafter, and they moved back to Georgia.

Jackson was the great grandson of William Jefferson and Rachel Daniell, and a descendant of Governor Robert Daniell of Carolina and later South Carolina (after the colony was split into two). Since Burke County's records have been burned, we don't know the exact date that his great grandfather moved to Georgia, but he and his family were among the earliest settlers to this area which became the Mars Hill community. The home they built, known as "The Cedars", was placed on the National Register of Historic Homes, still stands today only a short distance from this cemetery and the church where the family was so actively involved. In 1802, William Daniell joined Mars Hill Church by letter. The family's deep religious convictions are evidenced by the fact that several of William's sons and grandsons became Baptist ministers (George, Jeremiah, Beaton, Alfred, Moses, Robert). His great grandfather. lived a long and vigorous life. Family stories recount how at age 90, William held a two week reunion at his home of his children and their families which would have been a large number indeed. Their descendants continue to meet in an annual reunion which has been ongoing for more than 70 years.
