Son of John Burge and Martha Adaline "Linnie" Burge Dilday

Samuel J. Burge 's mother was Martha Adaline Burge born 1793 North Carolina. She was married to Seth Dilday, but her son did not accept that name. And DNA evidence leads to the belief that Samuel was actually a biological son of Seth Dilday

Samuel Burge . he was born in TN and was brought to MS when he was about 5 by his Uncle John Burge and remained in his household. Supposedly Sam's mother was Martha Adaline Burge born in or about 1793 in N.C. Mrs. Elsie Grisham said her grandparents(John) had raised Sam. She said that Aunt "Linnie" married Seth Dilda/Dilday/Dilby after she was too old to have any more children. I Seth and Martha Adaline. On the 1840 MS census Anderson, John and the Dildays are listed in Tippah or the othe other county that became Benton County later on. In 1850 Andy is listed in the household of Seth Dilby 61 fmr. Va., wife Martha 57 NC, Elizabeth J. 21 TN, Amanda 15 TN, and then the Burges with a misspelled name. Anderson Byrd 35 Tn, Seth Lewis 9 MS, John 7 MS, Marion 6 MS, Martha 4 MS, Anderson 2 MS. The family had moved from MS to Independence County, AR, Barren Township in July of 1850. Andy's wife Sarah Margaret Gordon Burge took sick as they crossed the Mississippi River and died 7 days later. Then in the 1860 census Martha Adaline Dilday is living in Ind. Co. with her sister Malinda Lathum/Latham.

Samuel J. Burge joined the Confederated army on Oct. 27, 1861 in Grenada Miss. He was in Co. F, 33 Regiment Mississippi Infantry, 3rd Battalion. He was wounded in the Battle of Shiloh. Later he was wounded again in the Battle of Chickamauga. According to his widow years later when she applied for a pension, he was taken prisoner and was imprisoned in Indiana until the end of the war.

3d Battalion, Infantry CSA Served with the Army of the Mississippi -Company F 22 Miss Inf. 3rd Battalion. Enlisted Oct 27 (Grenada ,Miss)or Oct 11, 1861 at Tippah County. WounDed at Shiloh - April 1862. WounDed at Chickamuga Sept 20, 1863. Sent to field hospital Sept -Dec 1863. Reported as Deserter after long absence,dropped from roll- Feb12,1864. Pension states he was captured and sent to a federal prison in Indianapolis , Ind. Discharged or released May 1865 in Washington D.C.. Served in Company F, 22nd MS. Infantry, rank: . Enlisted Oct 11, 1861, discharged from prison May 4, 1865. (government headstone) His home address was listed as Asland, MS.
