Horace was named for his mother's brother, Horace A. Overall, and probably for his mother's father, Abe Overall. He seems to have gone by his initials, A.W.H., as he is referred to this way on both the 1850 census and his marriage record.

For Sunday many of the well-to-do men wore a blue or black broadcloth coat which cost from four to ten dollars a yard. . . Later Dr. Horace Sneed, Dr. J. S.Harrison, the Hayes boys, the Turners, and the Turneys were the leaders in fashion.
