Brief Illness Fatal Sunday to C.N. Gorham

American Insurance Co. Manager Succumbs to Heart Disease

Pioneer’s Son, and Long Prominent in Civic Circles Here

Ill only two weeks, Charles N. Gorham, manager of the western department of the American Insurance company of Newark, N.J. and prominent in the city’s business and social life for many years, died in his home Sunday on North Second street road.

Heart disease is believed to have caused his death. Mr. Gorham had remained active in business until he was taken ill late in July.

Member of a pioneer Rockford family, Mr. Gorham was born July 1, 1867, in Winnebago and had spent practically all of his life in the locality. He moved to Rockford with his parents when a boy.

Mr. Gorham’s grandfather, Alonzo Gorham, settled here in 1840 and was prominently identified with civic and business enterprises, as was Mr. Gorham’s father, the late Orange-Rollin Gorham.
Graduated from Rockford high school. Mr. Gorham obtained his start in the insurance field with the old Forest City Insurance company here as an office boy.

His promotion was rapid, the position of cashier and bookkeeper following within three months. His success attracted attention of officials of the old Rockford Insurance company, and in four years Mr. Gohram was special agent and adjuster in the farm department of Illinois for that company, In 1899, when the American took over the Rockford, Mr. Gorham was made superintendent of agents in the farm department, directing the organization of field work in several states.

State agent for the company in Indiana for six years, Mr. Gorham returned to Rockford in 1912 to assume the post of assistant manager of the local office. His thorough knowledge of the insurance business today was emphasized by friends here who recalled that Mr. Gorham was instrumental in clarifying various phases of the work and establishing uniform policies. He was appointed Rockford manager in 1924., holding that office up to the time of his death.

Fond of athletics and sports, Mr. Gorham in his younger days was a pitcher of some repute for a number of Rockford amateur baseball teams. Golf also was a sport that attracted him. He was an active member of Rockford country club for many years.

Other organizations with which Mr. Gorham was affiliated include, Rockford Country club, Mid-Day club, Elks, Union-League of Chicago and Columbus club of Indianapolis.

Mr. Gorham was unmarried. He leaves a brother, Frank F. Gorham of Beloit, and two sisters, Mrs. Laura Gorham Harper of Rockford and Mrs. Marie Gorham Irwin of Chicago.
