Death Claims Early Settler of Jackson

Enoch Burns Ferrin, well-known Jackson resident and one of the early settlers in the Jackson Hole valley, died Monday, October 8, at his home in Jackson. He was 76 years old.

Prior to the time of his death, Mr. Ferrin had been in the St. John's Hospital for a week with a light case of pneumonia, and following his discharge from the hospital, he suffered a relapse and died early Monday morning at his residence. He had been in poor health for more than five years.

Enoch Burns Ferrin was born at Eden, Weber County, Utah, November 4, 1869, the son of Heber C. K. Ferrin and Martha Jane Burns. He came to the Jackson Hole country in the fall of 1900, and homesteaded five miles north of Jackson. A short time thereafter, he was married to Nellie G. WIlson on May 9, 1904, at Wilson, Wyoming.

After proving upon his claim in 1907, he took up a desert which is now the north part of the town of Jackson in 1913. He then bought the Ferrin Ranch, near the mouth of Cache Creek, which is now the family home.

During his many years of residence in Jackson, Mr. Ferrin was engaged in saw-milling, timber work and ranching. He was active in social and civic organizations, and was particularly instrumental in securing funds and labor for the construction of the St. John's Hospital. Prominent in Church activities, Mr. Ferrin was the first presiding elder in the Jackson Ward of the L.D.S. Church.

His survivors include his widow, Nellie G. Ferrin, Jackson; sons, Burns P. Ferrin, Jackson; Donald M. Ferrin, Haxtum, COlo.; Rud Ferrin, Jackson; Pfc. Wilson A. Ferrin, Camp Lee, Va.; daughters, Mrs. Faye Porter, Pocatello, Ida.; Mrs. Faith Nelson, Santa Barbara, Cal.; Mrs. Hope Brownfield, Jackson; Mrs. Joy Fetters, Jackson; sisters, Mrs. Walter Kenny, Los Angeles, Cal.; Mrs. Ruth Perkins, Centerville, Utah; Mrs. Veda Wansgard, Ogden, Utah; brother, Earl Ferrin, Venice, Cal.; and nine living grandchildren.

The funeral services, conducted by Bishop Robertson, will be held Friday, October 12, at the L.D.S. at 2 p.m. Mrs. Howard Ferrin will be in charge of the music. Burial will be in the Jackson Cemetery.
