My great-uncle Jack Edward Blackhurst was born on November 30, 1925 in Hollywood, Florida, the second child of Henry O'Dell "Bop", and Mary Ethel Ervine Blackhurst. The family moved back up to their home in Cass, West Virginia a few months after Jack was born. My grandfather Donald Lee Blackhurst was born three years later.

Jack and his brothers all had a natural aptitude for carpentry and engineering, so as boys, they helped their father and grandfather with the family carpentry business. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Second World War, and in the Korean War, and he married his wife Alice around the time he was discharged.

Once Jack was back home with his wife in Belle, West Virginia, he began his career as a machinist for DuPont, where he worked for many years. He and Alice had one child, Bruce Edward Blackhurst (1954-2012), and they were a kind and nurturing uncle and aunt to my mother, her siblings, and their many cousins.

I only had the opportunity to meet my great-uncle Jack once at a family reunion in 2010, but I relished every moment I got to spend with this kind, gentle, and godly man. I enjoyed hearing his old war stories, and his many tales about his brother Don, the grandfather I never knew. He passed away peacefully at home on June 29, 2016, at the age of ninety, and is survived by his youngest brother, and a host of nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
