Sister Mary of the Angels died at 8:45 pm Saturday, October 28, 2017, at the Monastery of the Poor Clares after suffering patiently with a long illness. Mary Louise O’Connor was born November 10, 1929, the daughter of Timothy Patrick O’Connor and Margaret Cecilia (Kelly) O’Connor in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She was the youngest of three children.

Sister Mary attended Elizabeth Seton High School and graduated from Seton Hill College with a B.A. in Psychology. She entered the Poor Clare Monastery in Cleveland, OH, on October 23, 1953, and received the name Sister Mary of the Angels at her Investiture on October 24, 1954. She professed her Simple Vows on October 24, 1956, and Solemn Vows on October 24, 1959. In 1961, she came to help the fledgling community in Kokomo in various ways and transferred permanently in 1967. She generously served the community as novice mistress, vicaress, and abbess.

She is survived by two nephews and three nieces as well as two grandnieces and a grandnephew.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and her brothers, Rev. Robert O’Connor, and Donald O’Connor.

As a community we wish to express our gratitude to Dr. Joseph V. Westrom and staff and to all those who gifted Sister Mary by their prayers and kindnesses over the years. God bless and reward each one with peace.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 am Saturday, November 4, 2017, at the Monastery of the Poor Clares, 1175 N. 300 W., Kokomo, with Bishop Emeritus William L. Higi the celebrant. Burial will follow in the cemetery on the Maria Regina Mater Monastery grounds within the enclosure which she so dearly loved. The public is welcome to come for viewing at the monastery chapel from 6:30-7:30 pm on Friday where the Rosary will be offered at 7:30 pm. Shirley & Stout Funeral Home & Crematory is assisting with arrangements.
