Judge Clarence Edward "C. E." Wright graduated from the former Southern Illinois Normal University in Carbondale in 1923. He was principal of Elkville High School during the 1920s and also was an athletic coach.

He was well known through the Southern Illinois sports world as a basketball referee.

He graduated from the Law School at Washington University in St. Louis in 1932 and began practice in Carbondale. He was appointed as assistant state's attorney to former State's Attorney Glen O. Brown in the early 1930s, and later was elected state's attorney in 1935 and 1940.

His first judicial post was in 1942 when he was elected to the former position of Jackson County Judge. He was re-elected in 1946 and 1950.

He was elected one of the three judges of the First Judicial District of Southern Illinois in 1951, and served in that capacity until his retirement.

During his service as a circuit judge, he was appointed to the Appellate Court for the Second District in Ottawa, by assignment of the Illinois Supreme Court, and served that assignment from June 1957 through January 1964.

He later was transferred to the Fifth District Appellate Court in Mount Vernon, where he served until December 1964.
