MRS. A. C. ADKISSON'S FUNERAL HELD SUNDAY
Mrs. Amanda Adkisson the widow of George W. Adkisson died at her home No. 903 Big Four Avenue, Hillsboro, Friday morning at 6:15 o'clock. Apoplexy was the cause of her death, which came after an illness of more than two months. On December 12, 1934, Mrs. Adkisson arose rather early in the morning, and went to the kitchen of her home. Soon after reaching there she was seized with an attack of apoplexy, and fell on the floor, her left hip being fractured in the fall. She never regained her former health and as her advanced age complicated the trouble and prevented any permanent recovery being made. She continued to grow weaker, until the end of her life came Friday morning.
Funeral Sunday
Funeral services of the deceased were held Sunday afternoon at the Bass Funeral Home at two o'clock, the Rev. J. E. Evans Methodist Episcopal Minister, officiating, and burial was made in Clear Springs Cemetery.
As the death of Mrs. Adkisson came after an illness in which an accident had a part, an inquiry was necessary, and it was held Friday morning by coroner George Chase.
Before she was married, Mrs. Adkisson was Amanda Catherine McLain (2), a daughter of the late Addison and Catherine (Lewey) McLain. They were natives of North Carolina who immigrated to Montgomery in the early days of the pioneers in the wilderness which Illinois was then. They settled on a farm in the Waveland neighborhood, where their children were born, reared and educated. Their daughter Amanda Catherine was born on July 16, 1848 and at the time of her death she was 86 years 7 months and 6 days old. Mrs. Adkisson was married twice. Her first marriage to Martin T. Johnsey, a farmer of the Waveland neighborhood was on Oct 14, 1875. One son was born to them, George Addison Johnsey. After Mr. Johnseys death, she was married to George W. Adkisson who was a widower with one son John. Their marriage took place on Oct 11, 1882 at Hillsboro. Three sons and one daughter were born to them.
Moved here in 1923
Mr Adkisson's death occurred on Jan. 6, 1899, and Mrs Adkisson continued to make her home on the farm homestead in the Waveland neighborhood, where she spent the greater part of her life until 1913 (3). Then she bought property on Big Four Avenue north of the Junior High School in Hillsboro to which she moved. She continued to make her home there, for the rest of her life. Her youngest child Walter Adkisson of Hillsboro, made his home with her, until a few years ago, after his marriage. Since then she lived alone, much of the time, as her health was good. She was quite active and she loved her home.
Mrs Adkisson joined the Waveland Presbyterian Church as a girl and remained a loyal and conscientious member of that church for the rest of her life.
Surviving Relatives
The surviving children are G. A. Johnsey, Hillsboro, contractor-carpenter; Charles Adkisson, who is Hillsboro night police officer, Etta the wife of Burl Watson, of Hillsboro, Fred Adkisson who is an employee of the Eagle Picher Led Co. and Walter Adkisson, who conducts an insurance business in Hillsboro. Eleven grand children and eight great-grand children, and a step son John Adkisson of Peoria, also survive the deceased.
Mrs Adkisson was the last to die of the eight children in the family of her parents. Five sisters and two brothers preceded her in death.
They were Mrs Giles C. McHenry, Mrs Thomas Hamilton, Mrs James Hamilton, Mrs Nancy Eller, Mrs Sumner Barry, William McLain and Newton McLain.
