Longtime resident of Sacramento and California completed his 83 years of life on March 21, 1996. Born in Oakland, CA, on July 21,1912, Dad grew up in the city but spent many happy days camping in the countryside, where he developed a love for the outdoor life and became an avid fisherman and hunter -- two hoppies he enjoyed his entire life. After graduating from Oakland Technical High School, Dad attended and graduated from San Mateo Junior College, where he played on the varsity basketball team and with his team went on to win the State Championships -- an event that fostered a lifelong interest in sports. Golf became his love in midlife, and he remained active through his seventies, when he was still able to beat his sons! Dad began his work career at Shell Chemical in San Francisco, and then on to Harron, Rikard and McCone, a Bay Area tool dostributor. Married in 1937, Dad and Mom (Margaret Ruth Johnson) began their new life in Oakland. They soon moved to Sacramento, temporarily returning to Oakland during [World War II] to work in the Richmond Shipyards building Liberty ships. Back in Sacramento in 1945, Dad drew on his years of experience selling woodworking tools and light machinery to found Beeby Machinery Company at the corner of 20th Street and Capitol Avenue. Finding sales his true calling, and working outdoors as his own boss his preference, Dad shifted his efforts to sell grain-handling equipment, rice dryers and those big concrete "silos" that dot the Sacramento Valley. This became his lifelong career, and he became an expert consultant, designer and salesman -- and friend of farmers all over the western states, particularly in the Sacramento Valley. His memory of places and distances between towns was phenomenal, and I think he greatly enjoyed showing off his mental roadmap. In 44 years of marriage Dad and Mom lovingly raised three sons and a daughter, all of whom they helped through college and saw happily married. Widowed in 1982, Dad retired in 1983 to a well-deserved life of ease and travel. To everyone's pleasant surprise in 1984, on a cruise through the Panama Canal with his sister and her husband, Dad had the good fortune to meet the second love of his life, Helen (H.J.) Wilson. The two developed a wonderful relationship and a long-term commuter romance was born. They have remained fast friends. Dad moved to Eskaton Village when it first opened its doors in 1992 and loved it, meeting and getting to know a new group of dear friends and a wonderful staff. In addition to his many friends there and those at the Carmichael Presbyterian Church, where he was a member for 45 years, Mr. Beeby is survived by his four children and seven grandchildren.
