1939, Dec 01 - Stephen Alfred Devereux, prominent St. Francis Co. farmer, passed away at his home, in Newcastle, this morning, of a heart attack. He had been seriously ill for several weeks. Mr. Devereux had been a lifelong resident of the county. He was born in Forrest City, on April 4, 1880. He lived here until 1913, when he moved to Newcastle, where he had since made his home. Mr. Devereux owned and operated a large farm, at Newcastle. He was a member of the Methodist Church. Conducting the ceremonies were Rev. R. S. Hayden, Pastor of the First Methodist Church, assisted by Rev. Clarence Welmand, of Colt Methodist Church. Surviving him are his wife, Hugh Ella Hamilton Devereux; seven children: Hugh S. (1907-1986), S. A., Jr. , Arthur Louie (1921-2009), and Miss Elizabeth Devereux (1919-2008) , Mrs. Katherine (Small) Morgan (1908-2003), Mrs. Ed Harris, and Mrs. Louise (W. V.) Armstrong (1910-1999); one brother, Phillip John Devereux (1886-1961); two sisters: Mrs. George Owen of Jonesboro and Mrs. Kate Oliver (R. E.) Oliver (1889-1982); and three grandchildren: Frances Ann Harris, Jimmie Steve Harris, and Elizabeth Morgan. Funeral service will be held tomorrow, at the family residence, in Newcastle, with interment in the Hughes Cemetery, at Good Hope. Pallbearers active: Earl Horton, Lee Horton, Hubert Hamilton, Pete Woods, Harold Horton and Troy Armstrong. Honorary pallbearers: M. S. Smith, Bert Batts, James Wolfe, E. Roy Keller, J. M. Thomason, W. W. Campbell, Elmer Hudson, Dr. J. O. Rush, Dr. N. C. McCown, Dan Wylds, J. C. Ashworth, Turley Davis, Frank Walls, J. C. Brown, Leslie Allen, L. L. Replogle, J. B.
