On July 15, 1950, while on a combat mission, his aircraft struck the ground as he made a rocket pass 14 miles northeast of Taejon, Korea.
Second Lieutenant Baas was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the Purple Heart Medal, the United Nations Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.
NOTE: His brother, Jay S. Baas, Lieutenant, United States Army Air Forces, was killed in action in World War II, and is also buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
