The following are notes from Karen Gritzmacher Atkinson the spouse of Douglas.
"It is with sadness that I announce the passing of my loving husband, Douglas, on February 16, 2016. He was born in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada and attended elementary and high school there. He graduated from University of New Brunswick with a BS in Geology.
Doug was an exceptional intelligent and perceptive individual. He was an honorable gentleman, a talented and dedicated professional and an honest caring friend. His career helped him meet one of his life goals - world travel!
He worked and lived in 7 countries: Canada, Singapore, Indonesia, Norway, Thialand, New Zealand and Australia with each offering travel choices when not working. He married Karen in 1990 and in 25 yrs they traveled 7 continents loving adventure travels particularly in Antarctica, Artic and Asia.
In May, 2015 he was dignosed with an aggresive cancer and fought a brave battle. End of January he was determined to enjoy his life with another cruise. We flew to Singapore and embarked on our ship for a 5-day cruise Singapore, Penang Hill (where he proposed), Langkawi and Phuket.
Suddenly his health declined the evening after Langkawi and we made it back to Bangkok, Thailand, his adopted home for many years. After 10 days in Saint Louis Hospital in Bangkok he died gently and peacefully on February 16, 2016 with Karen at his side.
