Bill was born on July 15, 1940. He was a lifetime resident of Des Moines, until 2015 when he moved with his wife Betty to Ankeny. Bill and Betty have lived at Mill Pond Retirement Community since that time.
He graduated from East High School but dutifully supported the North Polar Bears while his children were enrolled. There is a green hat that will always be associated with him at North football games circa 1980's.
Bill served in the US Army and was Honorably Discharged in 1966. He married his bride that same year.
He served the City of Des Moines for 34 years as a Firefighter. He fought fires, worked maintenance and finished his career in the Fire Prevention Bureau. He even rebuilt a fire truck from the frame up, saving the Department 10's of thousands of dollars.
Not able to stay retired, Bill worked for the MTA until getting a job with the US Postal service for maintenance at the Bulk mail center retiring for the last time in 2010.
Bill's passion in ministry was the Bus Ministry. Spanning three decades and three churches, Brother Bill brought countless children to where they could hear the message of Jesus Christ. Over the years, many have been back in contact to thank him for his impact on their lives. He also taught Junior Church for many years, where Father Abraham was a regular song and Sword Drills were commonplace.
In his off time, there was not much he couldn't do. He was the "Bill of all Trades". He studied upholstery under a dear friend and mentor. He sewed Christmas and Easter outfits for his three daughters on a regular basis. He knew electrical, plumbing, automotive, HVAC, and woodworking.
Then… when he wasn't working, serving in his calling, or crafting his talents, he loved to fish. Oh, but he loved to fish.
Bill leaves behind his wife Betty of 51 years, his sister Shirley (Donald) Stevenson of Altoona; Three children: Chris Bruner of Des Moines, Angela (Matthew) White of Ankeny, and Elizabeth Fruetel of Eagan, MN. Bill has six grandchildren: Nathaniel, Esther, and Jonathan Fruetel; Daniel and Michael White, and Bradley Severino, as well as many who knew Bill as Grandpa. Bill also leaves many nieces and nephews, friends and caregivers at Mill Pond that grew to love him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dan and Lily Bruner; his brother, Dean Bruner, and his son-in-law Trent.
