Indianapolis boy who held the welter-weight title at one time and was considered a dangerous contender among the lightweights. Bronson was born August 2, 1887, at Webster, Iowa; height, 5 feet, 4 inches; weight 135- to 140; color, white. He boxed the best lightweights in American and also the welters’ and was finally recognized as champion in the 145-pound class. He visited Australia in 1911 with Jimmy Clabby and later went to London. He retired in 1914 for a time but made a comeback in 1920, meeting Jack Britton, but was defeated. Bronson has now retired for good and has become a promoter.

BRONSON … Ray Bronson, 67, of 161 West Sixty Seventh Street, died in a local hospital yesterday afternoon following an illness of several months. He was a native of Webster City, Iowa and has lived in Jacksonville over 20 years. Mr. Bronson was for many years active in the promotion of sporting activities here and at one time held the welterweight boxing championship of the world. He retired from active business 15 years ago. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Elleanora Margaret Bronson; a sister, Mrs. Cora Manley, Port Clinton, Ohio and a niece. Funeral services will be held in the S. A. Kyle Chapel, 17 West Union Street, at 10 o’clock Monday morning. The Rev. Frank P. Dearing, rector of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, of which Mr. Bronson was a member will conduct the services. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
