James Hervey Demarest:
James Hervey Demarest, eighty-five years old, father of Dr. John H. Demarest, one of Harlem's old physicians, died at the home of his son, 59 West One Hundred and Twenty-sixth Street, on Friday after a brief illness.
He was the youngest of a family of ten children born to Peter and Elizabeth Demarest of Hackensack, New Jersey.
He received an excellent education, and in 1834 married Miss Hemphill, a member of a very old New York family. In 1850, Mr. Demarest became agent for the Central Railroad of New Jersey, the under Commodore Vanderbilt, and from 1863 to 1887 he was New York agent for the shipping house of A. & A. Lawrence of Bost. In 1888 he retired from business.
He leaves one son. The funeral will be held at the home this evening at 8 o'clock. The Rev. Hervey German of the Christian Reform Church will officiate. The burial will be in Hackensack, New Jersey.
